So You Say I Just Think I Saw a Goony Bird In Utah Fishing?!
I guess that it would be a reasonable speculation if you thought I was off my rocker if I actually told you that, but there would be only one problem with your assessment; I have proof. You see, I was actually out there on that fated day when I spotted the elusive creature, standing there on the frozen water, in Utah fishing for his dinner. Maybe it was just dumb luck that I happened to have my camera with me that day, but I like to think that it was shrewd planning on my part that led me to capturing this all but brief video that shows beyond a shadow of a doubt that they actually do exist.

Why Was He In Utah Fishing?
To this day, I have no idea how he came to be in Utah fishing, but the reason I was there was that I was doing my part as a Granddad taking my grandsons out for a day of fishing ourselves. You couldn’t have asked for a prettier day, the sun was out, there was no wind, the ducks and geese were flying all around, and we were absolutely having a blast. We were catching a lot of fish, and because we already had a lot of fish at home in the freezer, we were just catching and releasing them. I guess that made the Goony Bird mad when he spotted us doing that , because he started wildly flapping his wings and stomping his feet. It almost looked as if he was dancing on the ice.

Utah Fishing Is For The Birds!
He seemed a little ticked off that we were there, and gave us this coy, almost evil little smile as I filmed his brief encounter with us. I guess he thought that Utah fishing was for the birds, not us. It was all rather comical at the time, but looking back at the situation, it could have gotten dangerous. You never know what wild animals (or birds) will do when agitated. And I could tell from his markings that his particular breed was from Nevada, as indicated by the red and black stripes of his plumage. I was later told by the Fish and Game that they are a rather aggressive type of Goony bird. I even tried to calm him down by using a human name to talk to him and calm him down, but that didn’t seem to do the trick.

Will This Utah Fishing Incident Keep Me From Fishing?
After such a harrowing experience, the weaker minded individual might have been tempted to quit fishing, but not me. I love Utah fishing, and any experience on the water (or ice) is something to cherish. And when you take kids with you and teach them to have a love of nature and the outdoors, it makes it that much more worthwhile. So the next time we run into a Goony bird, we will be smarter for the lessons learned here and know better how to handle them. So good fishing to you all, and don’t forget to take some kids with you.
